Fashion people like to argue about things. Every ten years or so we all start talking about two ideas and we spend a few years fighting about which one is better. Now everyone is talking about minimalism vs maximalism in fashion—about being simple and quiet or being big and loud. Maybe we are asking the wrong question. Maybe we should be thinking about what it means to choose one over the other.
The Case for Minimalism as a Radical Act
Maximalism Is Not the Opposite of Discipline
People often think that maximalism is about wearing lots of things and being crazy.. That is not true. Maximalism is actually very hard to do. You need to know a lot about colors and how to put things together. You need to be able to balance lots of things. When you get it right it looks amazing.. When you get it wrong it looks messy. The people who are good at maximalism are not just throwing on lots of clothes. They are making choices about what to wear.
“Whether your clothes are quiet or loud they should always be saying what you want to say.”
The fact that we are even having this debate about minimalism and maximalism is interesting. It shows that we are all trying to figure out how to live in a world that’s overwhelming. Do we want to simplify things or do we want to add more to our lives? Some people like to keep things simple while others like to make things more exciting. Neither way is better. They are just different.
The Generation Blurring the Lines
The younger generation Gen Z is not really interested in this debate. They do not think that you have to choose between minimalism and maximalism. They like to wear things on different days depending on how they feel. They might wear clothes one day and crazy clothes the next. They are not trying to make a statement. They are just expressing themselves.
Choosing Your Side of the Argument
In the end it does not matter whether you like minimalism or maximalism. What matters is that you are true to yourself. If you wear clothes just because you think it looks cool that is not really you.. If you wear crazy clothes just to get attention that is not really you either. The important thing is to wear what makes you happy and what feels like you.
The minimalism, vs maximalism debate is worth having because it makes us think about what we want from our clothes.. When we think about that we can start to figure out what our own personal style is. Whether your style is quiet or loud it should always be yours.
